MODEL OVERVIEW

About this model: GE PEM31FMDS

Exact-SKU 800-watt PEM31FMDS with sensor messages, compact trim-kit options and manual-power controls.

A compact 800-watt model with exact kit references

PEM31FMDS is a 1.1-cubic-foot, 800-watt GE Profile countertop microwave in fingerprint-resistant Black Slate, 24 inches wide in GE's listing. The linked owner's manual goes further than a family heading: its optional-accessory table prints the complete PEM31FMDS suffix beside JX827FMDS and JX830FMDS built-in trim kits. It separately names JXA019K as an under-cabinet hanging kit. These are different mounting choices, both optional; neither should be inferred merely from the oven's color. The exact SKU in the PDF makes its control and troubleshooting pages applicable to this particular compact model rather than an adjacent finish.

Where sensor cooking changes the time

GE lists Popcorn, Reheat, Beverage, Vegetable and Potato sensor buttons for this SKU. The manual contrasts those shortcuts with Cook Time: a humidity sensor waits for steam and adjusts the remaining cooking time. Its Reheat instructions target single servings and steer larger amounts to Cook Time; Vegetable and Potato programs also depend on steam before their countdown. Opening the door too early during Popcorn can trigger Err. These details explain why a sensor program may seem slower to show a countdown and why wet container exteriors can mislead sensing. Use the exact pad and portion guidance rather than treating every long pause as a failed control.

Handle ERR and a lit panel that does not start

The troubleshooting table gives ERR two sensor-specific paths: the door opened before steam was detected, or steam did not arrive within the allowed time. It says Cancel/Off clears the first display and Cook Time can add heat after a timeout. Start/Pause also has its own role: the manual says it can pause without opening the door and start again on a second press. If the panel is lit but cooking will not begin, GE asks the reader to check a securely closed door, a completed selection and Start/Pause. That ordinary setup problem should be separated from ERR before seeking service.

LOC, FOOD, PF and F3 are different messages

On this exact-model manual's page 20, LOC means the controls are locked; holding Cancel/Off for about three seconds unlocks them. FOOD means the door has not been opened, so food or a beverage may not have been placed inside. PF records a power failure and is cleared with Cancel/Off. F3 is different: a key has stayed active for more than 60 seconds, possibly because liquid remains on the panel. GE directs Cancel/Off and thorough drying after cleaning. The operating page calls the lock display LOCKED while troubleshooting says LOC, so rely on the displayed message's context rather than inventing an additional fault code.

Use manual power and turntable options deliberately

PEM31FMDS offers ten power levels and a glass turntable that can be switched off for a large dish. The manual explains that lower levels cycle microwave energy, whereas level 10 cooks faster and often calls for more stirring; weight defrost and timed defrost are separate selections. During timed cooking, Start/Pause resumes after a deliberate pause. The turntable support must stay in place while the oven runs, even when rotation is switched off. Keeping the control panel clean and dry is especially relevant to this model's F3 message, and it avoids mistaking residue for a failed keypad.
