MODEL OVERVIEW

About this model: GE JRP28SKSS

JRP28SKSS is GE's stainless 24-inch double wall oven with two 2.7-cu-ft cavities. The upper SmartSet oven self-cleans and displays F errors; the lower is knob-controlled and standard-clean.

Identify a narrow double oven, not a single

GE identifies JRP28SKSS as a stainless steel 24-inch double wall oven with two separate 2.7-cubic-foot cavities. The overall width is 23.75 inches, and the published cabinet cutout is 22.5 inches wide, 48.125 high and 23.5 deep. Those are this double oven's figures; the same family manual also names the much shorter JRP20 single. Consult the installation directions before judging an existing cabinet or circuit suitable. The linked PDF cover lists JRP28 among several models, while GE's exact SKSS page establishes that there are two traditional electric cavities. A total of 5.4 cubic feet is therefore split equally above and below. The stainless finish and paired doors help recognize the unit, but a shared cover cannot tell a user which controls or cleaning system are installed in each chamber. That distinction drives almost every useful operating and troubleshooting step.

Keep upper and lower controls separate

The upper JRP28SKSS oven uses SmartSet electronic touch controls; the lower is operated by its temperature knob as described for this family. The exact listing assigns Delay Bake with Cook & Hold, Fahrenheit/Celsius selection and Control Lock to the upper chamber only. The manual reinforces this: timed-bake directions and lockout explicitly exclude the lower oven. After baking below, turn its knob to OFF; pressing upper CLEAR/OFF will not replace that physical step. Both cavities have two racks and four positions, so place each rack before heating and choose its position according to the food. The separate kitchen timer only counts and beeps; it does not control either cavity. Confusing that timer with the upper Cook Time setting can leave food heating unexpectedly. If a customer reports that the lower oven will not accept a delayed start or lock command, first note that those touch features were never listed for that chamber.

Clean each cavity by its own method

Cleaning differs even more. GE lists Self Clean and automatic door locking for the upper oven, while the lower cavity is Standard Clean. The shared guide marks the self-clean procedure unavailable for the lower oven. For the upper, a normal cycle is four hours, adjustable from three to five, and its door remains locked until the cavity cools below the release temperature. Remove cookware and foil before starting; do not pull on a hot latch. The lower requires manual cleaning after cooling. The guide says its oven floor can be cleaned with warm soapy water after gently lifting the bake element, with electrical power off and surfaces cool. Treating lower-oven soil as though a Self Clean button would burn it away would be incorrect. A cooling fan can also continue up to two hours after operation, so residual fan noise alone does not prove that either oven is still heating.

Scope the display error to the upper oven

The printed troubleshooting chart on physical PDF page twenty describes an F flashing with a number or letter as a function error. For JRP28SKSS this is a clue from the upper electronic display; the lower knob has no such code screen. The chart does not map a suffix to a definite failed component. Record the characters and which cavity was used, touch upper CLEAR/OFF and wait an hour before another attempt. If the code repeats, disconnect all power at least thirty seconds, restore it and call service if it returns. LOCK DOOR flashing on the display is different: Self Clean was selected before the upper door was closed. A LOCKED light after cleaning points to temperature still above the door-release threshold. These messages cannot be used to claim that the lower standard-clean cavity has an electronic self-clean lock. Keeping the two cavities separate makes the manual useful rather than misleading.
