MODEL OVERVIEW
About this model: GE JGB850SEFSS
JGB850SEFSS is a stainless/gray GE gas range with a 2.5-cu-ft upper and 4.3-cu-ft lower traditional oven, five burners and a center griddle. Both cavities self-clean; its shared display can show F.
Identify two gas ovens and five surface positions
JGB850SEFSS is a GE 30-inch free-standing double gas oven range in Stainless Steel/Gray. Its total 6.80 cubic feet divide into a compact 2.5-cubic-foot upper oven and a larger 4.3-cubic-foot lower oven. This is a true two-cavity appliance, not a range with a lower warming or storage drawer. Across the deeply recessed gray enamel top sit five sealed gas burners and heavy continuous cast-iron grates. The right-front 17,000-BTU Power Boil handles a large pot; left front is 11,000, left rear 9,500, and right rear 5,000-BTU Precise Simmer. The 8,000-BTU oval center burner supports the non-stick griddle confirmed on GE's exact product page. The family PDF labels griddles as optional because it serves several models, so the SKU listing supplies the decisive accessory fact. Its stainless-weighted knobs and gray surface also distinguish this version when identifying a grate, griddle or handle. Use the full SEFSS suffix with a replacement order.
Choose upper broil or lower baking space
The digital touch panel has independent upper and lower oven commands, but GE classifies both cavities as Traditional cooking. The manual puts two rack positions in the upper compartment and four in the lower; the exact product supplies three reinforced racks overall. The upper oven offers baking and broiling. GE's natural-gas rating lists an upper broiler at 13.5 thousand BTU, whereas the lower broiler entry is 0.0, so do not instruct the owner to broil below. The larger lower cavity is better suited to tall roasts or multiple baking pans; its separate Start and Cancel controls matter when two dishes need different schedules. The shared manual prints a Non Convection panel above a Convection panel. This SKU is the former, despite the second drawing's Conv Bake/Conv Roast keys. Ordinary Bake uses gas heat primarily from a lower burner and calls for preheating baked goods. A Warm setting is for already hot food, not a method of safely cooking raw food. Distinguish the chosen cavity before changing temperature, cook time or rack.
Clean each cavity and protect the griddle
Self Clean is specified for both ovens. High-temperature cleaning locks the relevant door, and the manual requires surface burners to be off before the cycle; it also says they cannot start while cleaning is active. Wipe heavy spills and remove cookware, foil and ordinary silver accessories before starting. Three reinforced racks are listed for the exact product, but the shared guide says only dark enameled racks may remain during a clean cycle; when a rack's finish is uncertain, remove it and clean separately. After a cycle, let the door unlock by cooling rather than forcing it. For the cooktop, return each burner head and cap to its correct size and location so flames stay even. The included non-stick griddle receives gentler handling than bare cast iron and must cool before removal. A lower oven that will not start during an upper clean cycle needs its mode and lock state checked before interpreting it as a burner failure. The two oven lights and doors also need cavity-specific identification in service requests.
Report a shared-control F with its oven context
The rendered table on physical PDF page 27 calls flashing F followed by a number or letter a function error. The row is shared across this double-oven family and does not say whether upper or lower electronics triggered the message; it also gives no suffix-to-part map. Press Cancel/Off, let the affected cavity cool one hour and try the mode again. If F repeats, disconnect all power for at least thirty seconds, restore it and call service if the code comes back. A LOCK DOOR or LOCKED display while cleaning points first to door closure or cooling, not necessarily F. A blank or flashing clock after outage also has its own checks. Tell the technician exactly which oven was selected, whether it was baking, broiling or self-cleaning, the full display and JGB850SEFSS. Without that context, a generic F result can lead to replacing the wrong cavity's part.
