MODEL OVERVIEW

About this model: GE JES1289SK

GE JES1289SK combines a 1.2-cu-ft microwave, upper/lower grilling and a real rotisserie; REMOVE SPIT ROD is its documented mode interlock message.

A countertop microwave with two direct-heat modes

JES1289SK is not a standard microwave with a decorative rack. GE's exact stainless product page specifies 1.20 cubic feet, 1,000 IEC-705 microwave output watts, a stainless interior, a 13.625-inch turntable, rotisserie hardware and browning. Its linked owner book is headed JES1289 Double Grill with Rotisserie. The drawing on page seven separates a glass microwave plate from a black metal tray, browner rack and motor-driven spit rod. It also shows heating elements above and below the food. The controls mix touch keys with a selector dial that is turned and then pressed to enter a choice. Page eight puts GRILL, ROTIS and MICRO on separate keys. Identifying which physical parts are fitted before selecting a mode is more useful here than assuming that every accessory can stay in place for every cooking program.

What REMOVE SPIT ROD is telling you

The display text REMOVE SPIT ROD is a safety interlock message, not a random electronic fault number. The control map on page eight explicitly says grilling and microwave functions are prevented while the rotisserie spit is in position, and the troubleshooting row on page 24 connects the same text to a rod left inside. The rotisserie mode needs that rod, but MICRO and GRILL require its removal. Stop the attempted selection and allow the tray, forks and rod to cool enough for safe handling. With oven mitts, lift the rod from the right support, move it rightward and disengage its left end from the motor shaft, following the page sixteen removal sequence. Then set up the glass turntable for microwaving or the black metal tray for grilling and choose the mode again. The message describes the appliance detecting an incompatible physical arrangement; repeated key presses will not substitute for removing the spit.

Prepare the spit for rotisserie cooking

For actual rotisserie cooking, the black metal tray rests directly on the turntable support and catches drips. The rod's sharp forks hold meat in place, with one end driven by the left motor and the other supported on the right. The manual asks for a food size that rotates easily and warns that the door, cookware and rod become hot. Press ROTIS, then turn and press the dial to choose food type, specific item and serving size before starting. Page seventeen also provides a MANUAL rotisserie route when a known time is preferred. The upper and lower heating elements participate, so a paper, plastic or foil cover that might seem ordinary in microwave mode is unsuitable here. The instructions tell users to check that the food is fully cooked when the cycle stops, then remove the assembly with mitts; the program's countdown is not a guarantee of doneness for every piece of meat.

Choose the grill setting and safe cookware

Grilling also requires the turntable support and black tray, but not the spit. The browner rack or an oven-safe dish can stand on the tray; cookware should fit so it rotates without striking the cavity. The direct heating elements make the tray, rack, door and dish hot. Manual GRILL 1 uses only the upper element for surface browning, whereas GRILL 2 uses both upper and lower elements for more even browning. For an automatic choice, the dial collects a food type, specific food and sometimes serving size or cook time. Page eighteen says the oven may ask to Turn Food Over or Check Food; remove the cookware completely before turning food, and use mitts on the hot accessories. It specifically excludes paper, plastic and foil cookware or coverings in grilling mode. The same page repeats REMOVE SPIT ROD if the rotisserie shaft is still fitted, which explains why a grill selection may appear to do nothing despite an illuminated display.

Return to microwave mode and clean the separate parts

Microwave operation calls for the glass turntable and its support instead of the grill's black tray. MICRO accepts up to ninety-nine minutes; the dial enters time, and POWER chooses among ten levels. Level seven applies energy about seventy percent of the time, while Express begins a thirty-second high-power interval. Auto Defrost handles meat, poultry and fish up to six pounds; a timed defrost can be followed automatically by Micro Cook. GE also lists Popcorn, Beverage and Reheat for the exact product. The guide says to let the glass plate and black tray cool completely before washing them with warm sudsy water or in a dishwasher. Clean the rotisserie rod and forks with mild soap and water, and wipe the touch panel damp rather than spraying cleaner into it. One page of the manual says CLEAR/OFF releases Child Lock while GE's exact product field says Pause three seconds; until that naming conflict is resolved, this article avoids an unlock sequence and focuses on the unambiguous spit-rod interlock.
