MODEL OVERVIEW

About this model: GE JE1590BC

GE JE1590BC is a black 1.5-cu-ft Profile countertop sensor-convection microwave. Its guide documents CONTROL LOCKED and the protective CAUTION—OVEN HOT state.

Identify the JE1590BC's sensor-convection controls

JE1590BC is GE's black-on-black Profile countertop convection microwave with a 1.50-cubic-foot cavity and 1,000-watt microwave output. The exact product page confirms microwave/convection technology, sensor Beverage, Cook, Popcorn and Reheat, and a recessed 12.75-inch glass turntable. Its linked owner PDF names JE1590 on the cover and shows a selector dial surrounded by dedicated Convection, Combination, Microwave and sensor controls. That mix explains why the same cavity can be used for quick sensor heating or for hot-air browning, but the programs do not share all restrictions. The family guide says its shelf belongs in convection or combination cooking and must not be used for microwave-only heating. Sensor Cook instead asks for a food type on the display, then uses steam from the covered food to estimate cooking. Before following instructions from another countertop oven, identify whether the display is waiting for a food selection, a time, or a hot-air temperature. The JE1590BC's dark finish and actual dial layout distinguish it from other JE1590 color variants and from grill-equipped JES models.

Keep sensor cooking separate from a hot convection cavity

A sensor run and a recently heated convection cavity must be considered together on this appliance. The owner's Cook instructions show SELECT FOOD TYPE, followed by a dial choice, and warn against opening the door before steam is sensed and the countdown begins. GE's Popcorn section gives two package sizes: one press for a regular 3.0–3.5-ounce bag and two for a 1.5–1.75-ounce snack size. Opening the door while POPCORN appears causes an error message, but the page does not print that message verbatim. Close the door, use OFF/CLEAR and begin again as the manual directs rather than assigning an invented code. The same guide's troubleshooting chart states that above 200°F a sensor pad will not operate and CAUTION—OVEN HOT appears. This may follow convection or combination cooking: the user should allow the cavity to cool before retrying a sensor preset. The message is a normal protective condition, not proof that the humidity sensor has failed.

Read lock and heat messages literally

CONTROL LOCKED has another cause and a different owner action. GE lists Child Lock on the exact JE1590BC page; the guide says to hold OFF/CLEAR about three seconds to toggle it. With the lock active, pressing a button or the dial briefly shows CONTROL LOCKED. The display also has a normal Cooking Complete Reminder reading YOUR FOOD IS READY, accompanied by a once-per-minute beep until the door is opened or OFF/CLEAR is pressed. A locked panel, a hot cavity and a completed cook should not be grouped as one fault. For a refusal to start, read the literal phrase and recall what happened just before it: a three-second OFF/CLEAR hold, a convection run that left the oven hot, or an ended food program. Sensor controls temporarily blocked by heat can become usable after cooling, whereas an active control lock needs the OFF/CLEAR hold. If the guide describes only an unnamed Popcorn interruption message, report the text actually seen instead of asserting that it must say SENSOR ERROR.

Check the BC-specific installation and program sequence

This particular black BC suffix also matters for installation references. GE's exact product page lists optional 27- and 30-inch built-in capability. On page 8 the manufacturer table explicitly associates JE1590BC with JX1527CBC for a 27-inch opening and JX1530CBC for a 30-inch opening. The same table gives different suffixes for other JE1590 finishes, so the BC row is the relevant one when checking an existing installation or ordering a kit. The turntable support must be in place for operation, while the shelf restriction depends on microwave-only versus convection/combination mode. A useful service record says whether the oven was freestanding or installed with the matching optional kit, which mode ran last, whether the cavity was still hot, and the exact message that appeared. This preserves the manufacturer's distinctions between accessory fit, owner settings and protective heat behavior without inventing a numerical fault code.
