MODEL OVERVIEW
About this model: GE GZS24PYYFS
GZS24PYYFS is a 23.5-cu-ft counter-depth GE side-by-side refrigerator with an in-door icemaker, separate external dispenser and internal XWFE filter fault display.
Identify this side-by-side cabinet
GZS24PYYFS is a 23.5-cubic-foot, counter-depth GE side-by-side, rather than one of the French-door or four-door cabinets that share some GE filter language. The exact product divides rated storage into 15.6 cubic feet for fresh food and 7.9 for the freezer. Its owner-manual cover includes the GZS family, while the installation assembly on page 33 explicitly labels GZS24P as a 24-cubic-foot external-dispenser arrangement. That drawing matters because the PDF also illustrates larger GSS and internal-dispenser GOS layouts. Use the GZS24P outline when checking bins and door clearances. Counter depth describes the cabinet design, not a promise that its handles or open door stay flush with surrounding cupboards. Measure the planned route and the swing before moving the appliance.
Organize the two vertical compartments
The exact GZS24PYYFS specification calls for LED Light Walls as well as four glass shelves in each vertical compartment. One shelf on each side is fixed and three are adjustable. Fresh-food storage also includes four extra-large gallon-depth door bins and two drawers; the freezer side has two cabinet drawers. The owner-manual feature illustration shows the external-dispenser cabinet with the ice system placed in the freezer door, leaving shelf space behind it. Its lighting illustration is marked as varying by model, but the exact GZS24PYYFS product specifically confirms the Light Walls. Reposition shelves around taller containers without blocking the cooling air path. If an installation diagram shows a different number of bins, check the GZS24P row on page 33 before assuming parts are missing.
Keep the dispenser distinct from the main display
The eleven-inch-tall external dispenser serves water, cubed ice and crushed ice. Its small control strip has separate Water, Crushed, Cubed and Light choices plus a Replace Water Filter light. The manual says that dispenser light illuminates with ten percent of filter life remaining. A second, larger refrigerator/freezer control panel is inside the fresh-food side on the right wall. Confusing the two panels can send a user searching for Err on the dispenser strip, where it is not shown. GE lists a factory-installed, in-door icemaker for this exact SKU, and its removable ice bucket can be used to fill a cooler. Following installation, first ice may take twelve to twenty-four hours; an empty bucket during that period is a timing issue, not automatically a fault.
Interpret the internal filter messages
The inner right-wall panel is the one that displays filter diagnostic text. Err appears when no filter is present or the wrong one is fitted; GE specifies an XWFE cartridge for GZS24PYYFS. Leak Detected means water was found outside the filter, while Replace Filter indicates ten percent of cartridge life remains. Filter Expired follows the cartridge reaching its water-use capacity or six months in service. These notices are separate from refrigerator and freezer temperature numbers. Page 16 places the XWFE behind a rectangular access panel low in the fresh-food compartment, not in the freezer door or exterior dispenser. Record the exact displayed words before removing the cartridge. The family manual includes several filter variants, but the exact product page names XWFE and the control features explicitly include the leak and expiry alerts.
Respond to a leak or filter recognition problem
The troubleshooting table on page 34 makes the distinction operational. A Leak Detected message can disable dispensing water and ice; GE directs the owner to replace the leaking filter and wipe up water around its housing. Err with Replace Filter can mean the cartridge is not detected or its communication failed. Check that the installed part is XWFE, inspect the label for damage and make sure the cartridge is seated. If the filter must be removed, open the lower fresh-food access panel and follow the manual sequence rather than pulling at the outside dispenser. After fitting a sound replacement, check whether the message clears. Do not diagnose a cooling-system fault from an XWFE recognition alert, and do not ignore visible water simply because the compressor still runs.
Use cooling and door controls as context
GZS24PYYFS has a door alarm, Turbo Cool and Turbo Freeze shortcuts, and built-in Wi-Fi with high-temperature and door-alarm notifications. On the inner panel, Turbo Cool is tied to holding the Fridge button and Turbo Freeze to holding Freezer. These are deliberate operating choices, not fault codes. A door alert prompts a closure check, including packages obstructing the gasket; the manual says it can be snoozed with a key. The recommended starting settings on page ten are 37°F for fresh food and 0°F for the freezer, with time allowed for temperatures to settle. Observe those settings and the door state when investigating poor cooling. Connected notifications supplement the physical panel, but a specific Err, Leak Detected or filter-life message should still be handled through the XWFE checks above.
